is my dog sick?
Posted by Christen LeBlanc Ramsey (+271) 13 years ago
can dogs be sick in the traditional human sense? can a dog get a stomach 'bug?' the reason i'm curious is my 3yr old male pit bull has had the worst room-clearing flatulence, paired with loose stools. (lucky for us he's a smart fella and hasn't pooed in the house.) we have not changed his food for over a year- not in brand, or quantity. any ideas would be helpful before i take him to a vet.

If he has had all of his shots, then maybe he just got into something you aren't aware of that may have upset his tummy. I know our pit will eat absolutely anything. Two days ago he ate the bandage off his hind leg that he obsessively licks. Now I am going to have to get him a "cone of shame" in order to get that healed up and am just hoping he will pass the bandage and not puke it up. Almost sixteen years old and he isn't any smarter than he was on the day he was born!

You can always give your dog a tums or some kind of stomach relief. I have also given mine some gas relief pills also. I have a very gasy dog.

Google Hemorrhagic gastroenteritis.

One of my dogs got this a few months ago. Came on quickly as vomiting & diarrhea, within 48 hrs he was down. When I took him to Miles City Vet clinic they hospitalized him immediately. He pulled through and went home. I was told that the condition is not that uncommon in dogs, but can be fatal if not treated. Keep watch and get to vet if things do not clear up on their own. I would NEVER give a sick dog people medication without clearing it with a vet.
I hope everything goes well for you and your pet.

Hemorrhagic gastroenteritis causes severe and life-threatening vomiting, diarrhea and dehydration in dogs. Fluid replacement is the most important part of treatment. This is an inflammation of the bowel and is fairly common in dogs. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea.

NEVER give your dog raw wild game. It causes toxins that will kill the spleen. I had a neighbor feed my dog wild raw game. She thought it would be "funny" to have him mess all over my house. A joke. Right. He almost died. It took $3,000 and major surgery to remove his spleen to save his life. The number one canine toxicologist in the U.S. examined the spleen after it was removed and verified the cause of infection. His entire insides were covered with infection to the point you couldn't see anything on x-rays.

So..please do not feed your pets wild raw meat.

Diane is right. Dogs get stomach infections that if not treated immediately can turn into life threatening infections. Please take your pet in if it starts showing signs of illness. Antibiotics can usually stop it if it's in the early stages.

I would take your dog in, just to be safe. My great dane was having diarrhea and we thought it would get better. She ended up having some in her crate one night and had a panic attack which left her temporarily paralyzed in her back legs. We have now learned she has a neurological problem and the diarrhea was one of the symptoms of it. I also wouldn't give your dog any human gas relief products until you consult with your vet. Let us know how your pup is doing!

Lots of advice posted here, some good, some bad.

Normally my advice would be that your dog, depite all your most conscientious efforts, found something disgusting to snack on while you were taking it for a walk, so the nasty dog gas and the runs will pass in a day or two....

But since you noted your dog is a pit bull....well, I am afraid there is no hope, and euthanasia is your only solution.

Kacey, let me guess: You used to let that dog out to do it's business wherever it wanted to, right? I'm a dog owner also, but that practice bugs me enough to have left special treats for dogs that crap in my yard I wouldn't go so far as to poison one..

If you're a dog owner, please respect your neighbors! They want to clean up after your dog even LESS than you do! Scoop yer poop

As my advice i gave about tums and gas relief, i did talk to the vet first and they said it would be ok to give her. But maybe it was just ok for my breed of dog too, so check with your vet.

Yes, my pets all hate me.

Especially my cat.

Look how pissed he is, after I threw him in the snowbank.

he is doing better today- last night the gas and liqui-poo eased up. i have a theory that he may have eaten one of the pellets from the new kitty litter (that yesterday's news crap.)

when we adopted him from the chelsey-bailey animal shelter in butte he had ingested raw meat (i found him near the butcher's block) had worms and terrible gas! lucky for horace he is just so damn cute and smart we went back a week later and got him, as no one had claimed him. (he knew commands and we felt it fair to give his people a chance.)

people either love pit bulls or hate them. usually the haters have had an experience with a moronic dog owner- keep in mind the result would have been the same regardless of the breed. these guys (pits) are very smart and emotive to your emotions. he gets all nervous when i'm losing a pool game and start throwing the f*bomb.

I have known several pit bulls. If they're raised right they're no different than any other dog.

I agree with Levi...Depends on how the dog is raised...all dogs can be quite gentle if they have been raised right...

I have a Jack Russell that thinks he is meaner and tougher than any pit bull or rotten weiler alive. So far I have been able to keep him from actually finding out.

Nothing non-christian about speaking the truth. I have seen others use much harsher language.
