State Hiring Freeze

What is up with that? I've been checking out different employment opportunities through the state and they all have jobs open but can't fill them because of this "Freeze." Could comeone please explain to me what is going on.

I work for the state part time and they are still hiring. In fact my boss is interviewing people for an opening tomorrow. So am not sure where you got the information that they can open a job but not hire for it. I know in some cases if you have a quit or a retirement the state is just eliminating the position in an effort to save money; is that what you mean by not hiring?

i understand that they are getting rid of positions once a person has quit. But for example: I sent my resume into MCDC in Missoula, they are in desperate need of several people but they told me they can't hire anybody because of this "State freeze". I am so confused!!!!

My only guess is that the state just won't let them open a position until it has been approved. The position here in Butte is for a person who left back in September so it is taking awhile to get them opened.

we are on a hiring freeze due to another 5-10% budget cut that just was announced this month (on top of the 7% vacancy savings and cut we faced last year. I know that DPHHS is impacted and a directive has come down from the director that all job positions even those that are in the interview phase have been put on hold. Currently in my unit alone we are down 3 positions. Two of us are covering for five positions. Critical positions are possibly being filled but that is probably it. not sure how long this will last. Jobs may be advertised but they may not be able to fill them at this time.

Don't take this personally, but the answer to your question was best stated in a recent election slogan....."Its the economy, stupid".

It must depend on the department you're in because at my office they did interviews today and plan to call the sucessful candidate with an offer tomorrow.

And just an FYI for Amber; but most state jobs cannot accept just your resume, they need a state application and often times have supplemental questions. Many times the local office doesn't accept applications, they must go to the head office in Helena to be rated prior to the local office even looking at them. So just to save yourself some time look online or call the office first to make sure you send them what they want/where they want because each one requires something a little different.

I have went through the proper procedures to apply for these jobs and i don't take it personally i just don't understand why they have the positions open if they are not going to fill them. Thanks to all that have put in their two cents

It is a common practice for hiring managers to post an open position but not actually plan on hiring someone. It's a quick and easy way for them to keep their FTE open until room appears in their budgets.

DPHHS which encompasses a lot of programs seems to possibly the hardest hit. it is my guess that the program you are applying to work at is under our umbrella. these were probably posted before the news came down about the hiring freeze. i know of several positions that are not being filled but have been advertised. tough times ahead.
