Question for the Community

I am looking to get some feedback from the community about an idea I am hashing over.....I think that our community could really use a Big Brother/Big Sister program here. I am still doing research to see what is all required for one to get started but I want to get some feedback from the community. So those of you out there that might have something to share please let us know!

Ummm... what happened to the BB/BS program that used to exist in the late 1980's?

There was a BB/BS program there in the mid-70's as I was one of the adult mentors.

There used to be BB/BS when I was in high school, you got out of class and went to visit an assigned grade school class. It was a fun program, but nothing like the BB/BS programs in Bozeman. I was accepted to become a mentor there, but had to move before I could get my little brother/sister. I think it would be a very worthwhile program here...

I believe the BB/BS program in Miles City died out due to the heavy fundraising involved and the low number of participants. The guidelines were pretty stringent for volunteers and the person hired to be in charge of the program was very concerned about potential lawsuits and liability - not a bad idea to be very careful when your assigning a child to an adult who will be spending unsupervised time with him/her. BB/BS is not a completely volunteer program. Thus the fundraising to pay the salary of the coordinator.

High School students being assigned to a classroom was a different thing - don't recall exactly what it was called.

This would be a good place to start.

Oops - should be 'when you're.' (I hate when I do that!)

I'd be up for volunteering/helping with fund raising/getting stuff rolling for the next 6 months when you figure out what's needed...
