Dirty Jobs in Miles City
Posted by Traci (+153) 13 years ago
I am the senior class advisor at CCDHS. When discussing possible graduation speakers, one of the students suggested Mike Rowe of Dirty Jobs. We all laughed, but I promised I would give it a shot. What could they do but turn us down? I thought I would pitch them a dirty job in Miles City while I was asking. I am an avid watcher of Dirty Jobs myself and I couldn't think of a job in Miles City in late May that he hadn't done elsewhere. Can I get some suggestions?

There is a young man who started a feedlot cleaning business while he was attending CCDHS a few years ago. That must be a pretty dirty job and makes a good tie-in. Ask the north door crowd. Someone must know his name.

Traci...

We were just thinking of contacting him about a dirty job...that is in May!!!
Dirty Job...in the lambing shed. I just really want to see him covered in lamb afterbirth...shoveling pens full of well...lambing "stuff", carrying slimy lambs...and the docking of tails, castration, shots...not to mention the mad mama sheep! It's a smelly, mucky, slimy, dirty job...but someone's gotta do it!

It's Montana...and Eastern Montana at that...I'm sure you'll get plenty of dirty job ideas!!!!

I'm pretty sure they have some pretty dirty days out at the vet clinic. Too bad preg-checking season is over now. If it is spring time maybe he could do some semen collection/artificial insemination/bull testing but I'd guess he's already done something like that.

How about some kind of clean up after BHS? There's got to be some gross things goin on there. And then it could get attention to the sale itself.

I helped clean up after the BHS once and it was indeed pretty gross. There was a huge pile of pre-chewed french fries in one of the bathrooms.

Yah, I'd say BHS cleanup is not only dirty but unique. I can see an episode coming out of that.

When I worked for a Main Street merchant years ago he (the boss) would put a cardboard standup model in store facing the door. It was a big cardboard cutout of a cowboy just about five feet tall or so. They'd throw a real vest over its shoulders just to make it look a bit more real.

The thing was, we'd come in for work in the mornings and we'd find urine soaked carpet in the covered, outside entryway and palm prints (and forehead prints) on the windows right above. Eeeww.

After putting up that fake cowboy in the slightly dark store there were no more problems.

He could do several jobs during the sale, making a weekend out of it. He could clean the floor in the Bison, empty porta-potties, rake the stock yards, clean up the grandstands. There's a ton of things he could do over the weekend.

What about Philip Services were the physically get inside railcars and dig out product by 5 gallon buckets. They get up to 1000 gallons worth of product in some railcars. Nothing dirtier than Asphalt, Molasses, soy lethin, talc. Of course they would have to do the training, not anyone can just jump in one of those railcars!

The Kinsey Irrigation Company would be a great show idea. In the spring they have to burn all of the excess grass around the irrigation ditches. I'll tell you what - the guys come home pretty nasty after that. Plus, they have to rake out all of the grates once the water gets pushed and moving. I believe they do that in mid to late May. Terribly tough and dirty job.

It all makes one appreciate how much Mike goes through for each episode. People just throw hours of pre-training, behind the scenes stuff that never shows up in the program, and then the actual work - and he keeps on ticking like the Energizer Bunny!

I wonder how it makes him feel that we all just figure he's such a glutton for punishment while he makes the working man look so good.

Gotta love it!

I saw a preview for one with a cow that had a hole in its side and I thought wow Dirty Jobs is at Ft Keogh but it turned out to be in Alabama or someplace down south. However Ft Keogh also has Esophageal cows with holes in their throats so that might be something. I would call Ft Keogh to ask if they have any other dirty jobs or Quality Meats/Pacos might have something.

One can send in suggestions for more then one possible show idea. Having a chance to shot several shows close by, reducing travel expense per show, might be more of a draw then just a single idea.

It's funny this comes up now. I have been thinking about it and I think that spring branding would be good for Mike. Big calves on green grass, he could even run the nut bucket for a bit. Just make sure he takes the back, downwind on a big bull calf. That should make for a good show.

I don't know who he was or if there is still someone like him around anymore, but when I was last in the area there was a guy that used to pickup deads from the feedlots. He had a sign on his truck that said the used cow man. His truck certainly smelled bad enough to qualify as a dirty job.

A while back while surfing my Sirrus satellite receiver, one of the channels was playing a motivational speech that Dirty Job's Mike Rowe gave to the national convention of the Future Farmers Association.Excellent speaker.I suspect that between "Dirty Jobs",Ford truck ads/promos,etc. and narrating the extremely popular series "Deadliest Catch" the guy's plate is pretty full.

When I was in high school...I used to help during the horse races in the test barn. After a horse wins a race, you had to wait for them to pee...and catch it in a cup. And then pour it into a bag and seal it. Gross. Not only are you dealing with hopped up horses and pee, but race horse owners and trainers... a real treat! And...it's in MAY!

You have to be careful with the branding of calves. The animal rights people already think we're a bunch of heathens!
Top
Posted by Mindy B (+79) 13 years ago
If they let him bite the testicles of lambs off on TV, I don't suppose branding will be any more controversial. They have started putting a warning up on some episodes saying it contains graphic material.

Mindy B.

People that raise cattle have brandings in the spring for the newborn calves of that year. This consists of not only branding, but castrating the bull calves.

People that raise sheep have dockings for the newborn lambs of that year. This consists of cutting off the tails as well as castrating the buck lambs. One method of doing this is to cut of the bottom of the bag and pull the small exposed testes out with your teeth.

Imagine, that is where the idea of castration by Biting off the bag came from. Depending on the number of lambs to be docked, would be pretty time consuming to bite off say 500 head.

All I know is that I saw an episode where the rancher said it was faster to bite the testicles off and Mike Rowe bit them off. I believe it was in Craig, CO. Anyway I was just saying that if they showed that on TV, branding would have to get about the same PETA response. It hasn't stopped them yet because when I saw this episode it was a rerun.

If you get a chance, this spring visit a branding and a docking. Only on TV do pigs fly.

FYI Milk comes from cows, bacon from pigs, and eggs from chickens. Not already packaged and available in the super market.

I grew up on a ranch so I know what it looks like and I still think if they show testicle biting on TV, they are willing to show branding. But thanks for the advice anyway.

Ike... I'm not sure what you are trying to prove, and you seem to be knowledgeable in the world of cattle and sheep ranching...but your post proves to me you must have gotten your information from wikipedia.

As Mindy said, she saw an episode of Dirty Jobs where Mike Rowe bites the testicles out of a ram lamb...which was implying that if they would show that, they would probably show branding of cattle.

You then, explained to her the process of castrating lambs to her, and said "biting off the sac" would be more time consuming...

You must be confused, as you do not bite off the sac...you don't really bite anything...well I don't think you want to use teeth or bite...I wouldn't want a broken testicle gooing in my mouth. You must cut the sac off first, to get to the testicles.

Ask any old sheep herder, this method of castration was more time effective than the other options. I personally have seen thousands of lambs castrated with the good 'ol "mouth" method...and would put my money on it racing rubber bands or castration tools any day...

SpaceKase,
Not trying to prove anything, only, my experience and the facts. Guess, my first response is what are you trying to prove??

After reading and posting on numerous boards, forums, etc it seems to be common for many responders to completly mis-read the intent of the post or to respond without fully reading it.

Please re-read my first post To Mindy. "ONE METHOD OF DOING THIS IS TO CUT OFF THE BOTTOM OF THE BAG AND PULL THE SMALL EXPOSED TESTES OUT WITH YOUR TEETH".

My last paragraph illustrates the idiocy of "BITING" off the bag. Saying it would be time consuming is nicer than ridicule.

Being raised on a large sheep ranch, not only have I castrated thousands of lambs with that method, and have observed many thousand more.

Early on the show had many cattle episodes- branding, preg testing, & AI'ing.

I know a bit about the lamb docking episode-
The host used the lamb docking as an example in a speech explaining that on the surface things in livestock raising may appear harsher than they are. When they first cut lambs to castrate he said they stopped production and asked if they was another way. They then docked using rubber bands and the lambs were down on the ground moaning forever. The cut lambs bounded off into the field. These lambs were not newborns but older big range lambed lambs. The pulling out of testicles with the teeth was all about TV.

FYI-
Range lambed sheep do not see the inside of a building unless they are being sheared- so rubber banding lambs is impractical. Shed lambed lambs are rubber banded as newborns. They are two entirely different sheep operations.

I am sure cleaning those toilets like on the upper Missouri, below Fred Robinson bridge, Rock Creek and other campsites along there has to be the very worst kind of job. I can't hardly stand to even walk into those places. I don't know how they clean them, but they say not to throw certain things in them because they are hard to clean out.
