So, who is staying up late to watch the latest installment of sparkly vampires? The Montana Theatre is running a midnight show of the new Twilight movie tonight. Wonder how many 14-year-old girls are planning to sneak out?

Count my group in! Thanks to the Montana Theatre for hosting it! Our group's daughters are ECSTATIC (and so are a few of the adults).

Although it's no Harry Potter.

And I hope girls aren't trying to sneak out to see it. Pesky little problem with the curfew.

I was there last night alongside our group of about 20ish. If the seats were remotely comfortable, and the legroom was improved I would have been able to actually watch the movie. Instead I was wiggling around the whole time trying to find a friggin comfy spot. They REALLY need to update our theater.

Besides that, the parts of the movie I DID see was pretty good, except I still hate CliffHangers..........

Here in Utah the Twilight phenomanon is in full swing. You'll see more moms than teens at the movie. Why? My theory is that here in Utah the moms have been married since they were about 21 years old and have had kids almost since then. They realize that their youth was truncated and pine for the lost time. Edward and Jacob are their fantasies.

Josh---they just spent $40,000 on new boilers. That kind of blew the budget for awhile. Even replacing the elderly popcorn popper is a struggle.

I'm sure the owner would love to do a major upgrade but since the last cost estimate was in the quarter of a million dollar range, you'll just have to be grateful we still have the Montana at all.

Wendy, the "Twilight phenomenon" is in full swing across the entire globe. Utah is hardly unique. Fans have been in lines for days across the U.S., so I'm not sure why the need to find a theory behind Utah's obsession.

They realize that their youth was truncated and pine for the lost time.

As someone who has been married since the age of 19, I can most assuredly state that in no way do I pine for my youth or lost time. What a ridiculous overgeneralization.

It's all one big Mormon allegory (the "good" girl, the forbidden gentile vampire) - I'm not surprised Utah's ground zero for Crepusculnomicon Part II.

I have a problem with friendly vampire movies, especially ones try to pass them off as young hunks that have all the same problems as your average teen. I prefer my vampires mean, intelligent, blood thirsty, and deep down- evil. I just can't get into all the drama and lovey-dovey scenes.

Give me Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) and Interview with a Vampire (1994), or The Lost Boys (1987)any day over New Moon.

Here's a great list of real vampire movies-

Have you watched True Blood on HBO Chad? I haven't seen it yet, but from what I've been told, it might fit the bill.

To me, the Twilight saga isn't so much a vampire flick. It's more a love story that happens to involve vampires (and wolf shapeshifters).

I've never been a vampire nut. But, True Blood on HBO is surprisingly good.

I'd venture to say that's it's the 'adult version' of the Twilight series.

Anyway, Denise, if you look up the ticket sales for Twilight you will find that Utah theatres were in the 1, 2, and 3 spots for pre-sold out shows. Live in Utah for 15 years and you'll understand what I'm getting at. The culture here is different. Can you think of any other reason for 35 year old women to swoon over what is supposed to be a 17 year old boy? If the sexes were swapped we'd find it creepy. I find it creepy as it is.

Sorry, Lorin. Was busy today.

Actually, Wendy, my husband and I lived in Boise, Idaho, with its own sizable Mormon community, where my husband worked for an LDS-owned company, with a majority of fellow LDS employees. Our two nieces are young LDS women, living in Mesa, Arizona, another sizable Mormon community. I know of what I speak. I absolutely see no correlation between the Twilight Saga fan base and women having married too young, pining for their youth. Very confusing parallel.

Can you think of any other reason for 35 year old women to swoon over what is supposed to be a 17 year old boy? If the sexes were swapped we'd find it creepy. I find it creepy as it is.

Well, yeah. The actors are smoking hot. LOL.

This issue crosses both sexes. 16 year old Miley Cyrus graces every magazine cover and advertisement in all sorts of undress, and I don't see anyone trying to link that to men marrying too young.

We just got back from an early movie in Helena. The line for New Moon was crazy long. I haven't seen that many pre-teeny-boppers in one place since I got out of junior high.

Denise,

You'll find that Utah Mormons and other-state Mormons are not the same. I know Mormons who grew up out of state and those who are Utah natives. There is a difference in their world view. At least among the people I know personally. Perhaps I shouldn't generalize but that's been my experience. Miley Cyrus is a whole different matter, and creepy also, in my opinion.

I guess I'm just confused by the phenomenon. I understand the appeal to the teen set but their mothers? Geez, if they want romance read A Tale of Two Cities.

If you want good, grown-up, vampire and werewolf tales, find the BBC's "Being Human." Goes from terrifying to hilarious to heart-wrenching and back again in a matter of seconds. And nobody is either seventeen or sparkly.

Thank gawd.

Thanks for the "Being Human" recommendation. I've wanted to watch it, but I didn't catch it from the beginning. I'll put it on my Netflix list.

True Blood Rocks!

Edit: Just back from Netflix. It isn't out on DVD yet, but I've saved it to my list.

Yes, Wendy is deep in the heart of Core Mormondom. Non-Core Mormons (such as those that live here in Boise) seem a little intimidated by Core Mormons, and will go out of their way to out-mormon them.

I just think it is cool that the movies there now are current. I remember being way younger and Dirty Dancing was out on video before it hit the Montana!!

I'm excited to start True Blood. I have the first season on DVD, just need to find time to watch it. Has anyone read the book series? I'm debating whether or not it is worth the time to read it before watching the television series.

Kudos to the Montana. They always seem to try their best to get the newest releases. Being a small theatre, with little profit margins, makes it much more difficult than people realize. As I've said before, when I worked at a theatre during college, the prices of the concessions were more there than they are at the Montana, and that was over 17 years ago. Their efforts are much appreciated.

Interesting theory on Core Mormons v. Non-Core Mormons, Bridgier. Ever hear of Jack Mormons?

Re: Denise and Amorette's point about the Montana - yes, it's great that it's still operating and doing so at such affordable prices. When I moved here everyone said the cost of living was so much lower. It ain't necessarily so, folks. I've found four things that are cheaper in Miles City than elsewhere:

1) Top shelf liquor by the glass
2) Veterinarian fees
3) Car repairs
4) Movie prices (nowhere else could you pay admission and get a large drink and a small buttered popcorn all for $10 like you do here)

Everything else here is as expensive or more expensive than where I came from, including car insurance (that really surprised me). Rent might be less per month, but from what I've seen you get less quality for what you pay for here than you do other places. Hmmm... maybe this should be the topic of a new thread.

Nice, Josh.

I don't know, whenever I see reference to New Moon, I always get the Duran Duran song, "New Moon on Monday" stuck in my head. It's been there for DAYS.

I light my torch and wave it for the
New moon on Monday
And a firedance through the night
I stayed the cold day with a lonely satellite

Dammit all to hell.

Jack Mormon: An individual deemed by LDS adherents to be an inactive or lapsed member of the LDS Church who, despite his personal religious viewpoint, maintained good relations with and positive feelings toward the LDS church.

Or

The Jackmormons:

Mr. Dyba: Are you sure Mr. Snipes is chasing vampires with his Blade these days? From what I hear, he's still got his hands full with a much more heinous monster of an immortal (and some would say immoral) nature:

Very interesting definitions, Wendy. Here's the one I was going for, from Edward Abbey's The Monkeywrench Gang:

"A jack Mormon is to a decent Mormon what a jackrabbit is to a cottontail."

Steve - why do you think Mr. Snipes has been reduced to hunting bounties on brooding rogue teenage vampires? He's got to pay the gummint somehow.
