New York Yankees 2009 World Series Champions

Well Brian it took a while but the Bronx Bombers are back on top. What a game it was. Pettitte needed to be on his game and boy was he EVER! Matsui was unreal and well deserving of MVP honors and who else would it be to slam the door shut but Mariano Rivera.

Let me just bask in this:

for a moment!!!!!

Payroll 2001-2009

1.9 billion.

Taxpayer funded new stadium

1.3 billion.

Operating losses in 2009 alone

69 million and climbing.

Cost per win in 2009

3.2 million.

Cumulative cost cost of this championship

approaching 5 billion.

Purchasing a World Championship while

threatening the integrity of the game,

allowing people of intelligence to find and develop major league players

while you simply buy them, and

ignoring time tested business principles like profits and profit margins

Priceless.

I ordered some beef chow mein the other day, but found that it had a little too much matsui in it for my taste.

Bravo Derf! I enjoyed the series and there was some beautiful, even poetic plays. The umping left a lot to be desired.

Baseball has been the only sport I have managed to hold on to, over the years. I have always been a fan of the farm system and have spent many memorable evening sitting in minor league parks enjoying talented young men eager to "make the show" but somehow the game that I had hoped would remain just that, a game, has become just another advertising opportunity for corporate whores and unconscionable men that have no regard for who pays.

Mia culpa, I watched the series, demanding no more than I received. Doesn't that make me part of the problem. At sixty three years old, I suppose that I will never return to that all day scrub (move up) ball game that I hoped would never end. You have made me realize that I still hold onto, albeit vicariously the purely American game that has become the stereotypical American corporation.

Julie will be leaving you for Jimbo soon enough, Derf. Enjoy the groupie lovin' while you can.

Back to baseball ...

I hate the Yankees as much as anyone, and like you, Derf, I am a Red Sox fan (although I'm sure I don't measure up to your standards).

But let's be honest, it's not like the Red Sox didn't also "buy" their World Series titles in 2004 and 2007. The Yankees have the biggest payroll in baseball by a wide margin, but Boston - and several other teams - play the same game on and off the field that New York does.

Buying a world championship is the way the game is played now. I don't like it any more than you do, but I'm not such a homer that I can't recognize in the Red Sox (and other teams) what you seem to only see in the Yankees. Be realistic.

It just goes to show - if you can purchase the top free agents year after year - you'll win one now and then.

Here's my spin on how the major figures the last three championship teams were put together. I might need some correction on some of them. I think trading prospects for established players or developing players into elite major leaguers is far different than buying elite players and a championship in the process. It wouldn't be possible in the NBA or the NFL.

2009 Yankees

Jeter-developed by organization
Damon-purchased outright as elite player
Teixera-purchased outright as elite player
Rodriguez-purchased outright as elite player
Matsui-purchased outright as elite player
Posada/Molina-developed by organization/purchased outright
Cano-developed by organization
Swisher-purchased outright
Cabrera-developed by organization

Sabathia-purchased outright as elite player
Brunett-purchased outright as elite player
Pettite-(re)purchased outright as elite player (the Yankees developed him, let him go, bought him back)

Rivera-developed by organization

2008 Phillies

Help me out, here Phillies fans. I believe Rollins, Victorino, Utley, Howard, Ruiz, Hamels and Meyers are products of that organization, but I'm not familiar with how the rest of the team was put together.

2007 Red Sox

Ellsbury/Crisp-developed by organization/acquired by trading prospects
Pedroia-developed by organization
Ortiz-acquired after release, developed into elite major leaguer
Ramirez-purchased outright as elite player
Lowell-acquired by trading prospects
Youklis-developed by organization
Drew-purchased outright as elite player (I don't really think he's that great)
Varitek-acquired by trading prospects, developed into elite major leaguer
Lugo/Lowrie-purchased outright/developed by organization

Beckett-acquired by trading prospects
Matsuzaka-purchased outright as elite player
Schilling----purchased outright as elite player
Lester-developed by organization
(Wakefield didn't pitch in the playoffs but was acquired by trading prospects)

Papelbon-developed by organization

Nobody's whining. Just wondering how long the Yankees can afford to lose over 100 million bucks a year. World Champions or biggest losers? Looks like both.
