Walmart Near Civil War Battlefield Wins OK
http://www.foxnews.com/st...62,00.html

As a lover of all things Civil War this just pisses me off. We're losing more and more of our history to this crap and it just needs to stop.

In terms of United States history "The Battle of The Wilderness" is perhaps second in importance to Gettysburg and this is just sad.

Again, I hate WalMart.

Yeah. Those Civil War re-enactors gotta get hungry too! Why not stop and get a $5 footlong after the big battle?

Evidentially David McCullough & Ken Burns thought it important enough to speak out against it Levi.

Bridgier,

In one word - everything.

I just think there's a ton of stuff, from the people who fought to the view points of those who took part in it, that is so fascinating. A lot of my family is from Tennessee and when we'd go back for reunions we'd go to Look Out Mountain and Chattanooga and I guess from that the Civil War's always held a place in my heart.

I guess that's why I get so worked up about encroachments on these hallowed grounds.

Do you see the irony in starting a thread entitled "I Hate WalMart" with a link to a story on Fox News?

Take away a bit of our soul here, a bit there, and people hardly notice. After all, the almighty profit is the American way. Think of the amount of retail space that could be built on battlefields. Think of how much money could be earned by selling off museum collections and turning museums into shopping malls. Put a subdivision on the Little Big Horn Battlefield because there is money to be made.

Or, it is just possible, that sometimes preserving something of what makes us what we are is worth more than a price tag. Maybe. Maybe we need to remember our past, our nation's sacrifices, our collective soul.

Or we just need to MAKE MORE MONEY for the Walton family.

I am hardly surprised to hear that Wal-Mart is trying to destroy some of our history. It isn't the first or the last time that they will see an empty space as wasted profit. I am sad to see that our soul lost this battle to the buck but not surprised. At all.

So then Kyle - do you agree with Grant's assessment of the CSA's chances prior to the beginning of the war?

I also see the blatant contradiction between some of my "Profit At All Costs" posts and this one which has a decidedly anti-capitalist tinge to it but I'll take vital American History of profit any day.

Sounds about right for how things are going...

Tour Guide/Greeter:

"On this spot, in 1864, right next to the Nascar hat rack, where we're having a fantastic sale on #45 Kyle Petty distressed woodland camouflage trucker style hats, Warren's Cavalry crossed the Rapidan at Germania Ford. Truly a brave, and valiant effort by all. So, celebrate with 20% on our already low, low prices."

It really is a shame that nothing is sacred anymore, except Sam Walton. I have been fortunate enough to have visited some battlefields in Virginia and to think of the dynamics of what happened at those locations at that time are amazing. You are really taken back, but trying to visualize what took place there, with the sound of screaming kids and the sound of "would you like a buggy" in the background, I think is really going to take away from the historical beauty and signifigance of that site. Whether it just borders it or not. Lets give another cheer for the great state in which we call Wal*Mart.

I nominate Sam Walton to be the next face to be carved on Mt. Rushmore, what would this country be without his vision. Any seconds?????

I'm in the midst of watching Ken Burns' Civil War and I am in tears about what happened.

Not to get into a major discussion about the Iraq War but if the outcry over 5,000 lives lost is this loud, imagine how loud it would be with these numbers:

Antietam: 23,000 dead

Shiloh: 24,000 killed & wounded

Seven Pines: 12,000 killed & wounded

Chancellorsville: 31,000 killed & wounded

Gettysburg: Nearly 50,000 killed & wounded

Hey. There's been some pretty bloody battles at Wal*Mart the day after Thanksgiving.

It doesn't even have to be Thanksgiving for shootouts like in Billings. All you have to do is go on break.

With that alone Wallymart can say they can compete with any battlfield anywhere, and always with better prices.

Kyle: add this one to Wal*Marts favor
Billings west end Wal*Mart: 0 killed, 1 injured.

Horrible Tragidy, man went on break.

(this post is not intended to mock Kyles Statistice of the Civil War, and its tragic losses, or of the present war on terrorism. It is just intended to mock Wallymarts stupidity and ignorance.)

"I am in tears about what happened."

Okay.. and this might be a silly question, but... why? Why does this bring you to tears, but healthcare horror stories from people who are ALIVE RIGHT NOW is met with a shrug and "don't bring those sob stories around here".

I'm interested in the English & Spanish civil wars, as well as WWI, but I don't turn it into a religious thing.

The shooting at the West End Wal-Mart didn't really have much to do with corporate Wal-Mart, or the West End Wal-Mart itself.

On second thought, Wal-Mart hired both of the morons, so maybe it did have something to do with Wal-Mart, after all. Garbage in, garbage out.

Billings has two Wal-Marts. I don't go to either of them. If I need something at a Wal-Mart, I'll drive to the one in Laurel. As far as Wal-Marts go, it's clean, uncrowded and has (relatively) knowledgeable and friendly employees.

Sorry Brian, I forgot to express my sincere sarcasm in that post. I thought you of all would find it rather funny.

Give it time and the Wallymart in Laurel could have the potential of disgusts its neighboring west end Wallymart has. I really enjoyed going in to the west end Wallymart on the 1st and the 15th when the big crowds that showed up in busses and packed vans. It made for great entertainment.

Kyle - the wars (civil and otherwise) that Bridgier mentioned all had a considerable religious element to them.

I dont think Brid meant it as a general term of a religious element as in faith, church, or God... I think he meant as in a state of mind concerning emotions..

But.. I could be wrong
