Irene M. Messmer (Nuxoll) passed away Feb. 13, 2018 in Billings. She was born May 16, 1919 in Plains, MT and raised on a farmstead south of Miles City. She was one of Montana's last rural one room school teachers. She retired in 1974 but many of her students, now retired themselves, remained in contact with her throughout their lives, a true testament to her success, love of her students and rural life. One friend put it, "I've known Irene most of my life and half of hers."

She loved dancing and had a soul mate, travel companion and square dance partner for

nearly forty years in Gerald Larsen. Fifteen years ago, also on February 13 and in the same hour, Gerald passed away.

Irene’s stamina and fortitude allowed her to outlive all of her first generation relatives including her brother, Walter. She was 98 and a devout Catholic.

A vigil service will be held at 6 p.m., Thursday, at Dahl Funeral Chapel with Memorial Mass at 10 a.m., Friday, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. For a detailed obituary and to leave condolences please visit dahlfuneralchapel.com.
