JOHN BROADDUS AND JESSE HASTON
From 'Fanning the Embers', published 1971, Range Rider Reps, Miles City, Montana
John Broaddus, brother of Oscar, arrived in the Powder River country in 1887 to join his brother in the operation of the N Bar Ranch. Oscar had arrived in 1885 and homesteaded there. It was through the efforts of these two men that the post office at Broadus was established Feb. 6, 1900.
In 1880 the Newman Cattle Co. sent Jesse Haston, uncle of John and Oscar, to the Powder River country, Territory of Montana, to look for land for a ranch. He found land on the Big Powder and established the N Bar Ranch. The official brand book for 1885 listed this brand as the V Bar R. Haston was the purchasing agent for the ranches and was general overseer of the vast herds.
