Mary Smaby Anderson
Mary Anderson and daughter, Olive Haugland
I, Mary Anderson, was born in Norway on May 24, 1879, to Andrew and Martha Smaby.
I was four years old when we arrived in the United States and settled in Fillmore County, Peterson, Minn. It was here I received my education.
I married Martin Anderson on May 23, 1901, at Whalen, Minn. We came to Montana in 1907 to work on the Northern Pacific and Milwaukee Railroad. Martin worked on the bridge building crew and I cooked on the outfit car.
We homesteaded on the Mizpah Creek in 1909. Our home was a one room log cabin.
We had three children, Olive who married Ralph Haugland and lived in Livingston, Mont., before her death; Ernest, who married Clarice Hanson and lives in Sheridan, Wyo., and Maynard, who is single and lives in Miles City.
Martin Anderson passed away June 17, 1910.
I have three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
I worked until the age of 71: at present I am nearly 90 years old.
