Custer County. The Miles City post office building, pictured in 2017. The building's cornerstone is dated 1915 and the post office moved into the building in 1916. The county seat of Custer County (established in 1877), Miles City was named for Gen. Nelson Miles, commander of Fort Keogh. Along the Yellowstone River, Miles City was a station along both the Northern Pacific (1881) and the Milwaukee Road (1907) rail lines. A post office was established at Miles City in 1877 (November 16) with Louis Payette as postmaster.
