Someone commented my flickr photo of the Airport Inn Hamm's beer sign with a pointer to this one on ebay. It's cool that this shows photos of the inner workings of the sign.

| That sign is classic, probably stands out more than anything else at the Airport Inn. |
| My Dad had a similar one, it had a railing under the roof, and it looked out into the sky where instead of the big dipper, you saw a scoop! |
| Here in Billings, the old Archer's on Grand (currently the Rio Grand casino) used to have a beer sign very similar to the Airport Inn's. |
As I understand it, someone donated the current one after the fire. Based on the eBay prices, that was a generous donation.
I love the sign. I remember being hypnotized by it as a kid, especially since the old Airport Inn was much darker and more bar-like the new one. It glowed with its mesmerizing mystery. |
It glowed with its mesmerizing mystery.
That would be expressed so much better in Haiku form, Amorette. |
| Whenever I see a Hamm's beer sign, I am transported back in time.....to 1974....I am 12 years old, sitting at a table in the Wan I Gan bar south of Pray, eating a salmon sharpie, drinking a ginger ale, and staring at that sign. |
| Salmon sharpie? |
| Salmon sharpies was some sort of now extinct bar snack from the 1970s....they were salty smoked strips of salmon, sold in a plastic package. Emphasis on the salty. |
| When the perform the autopsy, the coroner can say, "Oops, he ate those salmon sharpies as a kid. There is still one lodged in his kidneys." |
I thought Gunnar was eating pink markers.
 |
I googled "salmon sharpies", and there is absolutely no information on this treat of yesteryear. Indeed, I only found one hit:

Pretty sad. Surely there is another oldtime bar patron out there on mc.com who remembers salmon sharpies? |
Gunnar as a boy after consuming one entire Sharpie:

This begs the question: How much of a dive was the bar where you were served "salmon sharpies," anyway? I've had some bad bar food in my day, but I've never been served dog treats. At least not to my knowledge.
