1. Trump announces tariffs on Chinese steel and aluminum. Chinese retaliate with tariffs on American agriculture. A trade war is looming.

2. The Trump administration last month banned Chinese phone giant ZTE from using US technology after accusing it of violating a deal in which it agreed to pay $1.2 billion for evading US sanctions on North Korea and Iran.

3. ZTE, which uses Android for the operating system for their phones, begins laying off worker.

4. The Trump Organization, managed by Trump's adult children Don Jr. and Eric, is involved in a huge project in Indonesia — golf courses, resorts, etc. — that is backed with $500 million from China.

5. President Wi of China gives Trump a call.

6. Trump tweets "President Xi of China, and I, are working together to give massive Chinese phone company, ZTE, a way to get back into business, fast. Too many jobs in China lost. Commerce Department has been instructed to get it done!"

Here are a few more dots to connect. This time it is Trump's connection with Qatar.

"Rachel Maddow explains an unusual story in which a Hollywood colleague of Steve Bannon says he was told by a Qatari who is a co-investor in a fledgeling 3-on-3 basketball league that he paid money to Mike Flynn, a story that might not mean anything if the Qatari in question didn't subsequently admit to meeting with Trump transition officials in December. Jed Shugerman, law professor at Fordham University, offers his best guess at how the dots connect."
