“People may not know that China imported more than 61 million bushels of U.S. wheat in marketing year 2016/17, making it our fourth largest buyer in the world,” said USW Chairman Mike Miller, a wheat farmer from Ritzville, Wash. “Farmers across the country have invested a lot of money and time over the years to develop a Chinese market that has great potential to buy even more American wheat. Now that effort is in jeopardy at a time when big global supplies have already pushed farm gate wheat prices down to unsustainable levels.”

The impact of tariffs has the potential to be significant. According to the Montana Grain Growers Association, during 2016-2017, China was the fourth largest purchaser of all classes of U.S. wheat. Additionally, for the past two years, China was the third largest buyer of hard red spring wheat, of which Montana sold seven million metric tons to China last year.

The disruption in the market could have impacts on wheat farmers for decades.

“There have been very few years in my career as a farmer that have caused me to lose sleep,” Michelle Jones, the president of the Montana Grain Growers Association and farmer in Broadview, Montana said, “But the tariffs are one of them.”"
