The planting of hemp for fiber and the construction of mills for the processing of the growth is limited to the states of Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin, the MileS City Chamber of Commerce is advised today in a communication received from Senator James E. Murray. The local businessmen’s organization, previously learning of the program to plant and grow hemp, presented many advantages of the region to take part in the program.

The article goes on to explain, in the Oct. 9, 1942 Star, that they were concerned about narcotic control so the feds were restricting where it could be planted.

65 years later we can all see how that worked. Sometime in the early 50's my folks had a photo of a 20+ footer leaning against a sheriff car, that had been cut down at their farm.
