"A Free People Cannot Happen With a Press in the Dark"

"We're going to put this in terms so simple that President Donald J. Trump can understand without nuance. Free press equals a free people. . . . .The problem is that every time Trump tweets or takes to the podium to decry fake news and the failing media, it's really an indictment of our democracy and Constitution. It's just that simple. . . . . American has never been able to just 'take someone's word for it,' even when the word comes from the commander-in-chief. Instead, we're a believe-it-when-we-see-it kind of folk. . . . . We'd suggest the truth and accuracy cannot be this hard or complex. As Pavol Demes a world leader who was here a week ago said, 'You cannot cover a lie with another lie and make it the truth.' . . . .The Washington Post
has recently adopted the mantra, 'Democracy dies in darkness.' If the [Trump] White House is successful at shuttering the daily press briefing at which almost every major American and world media sits at, then the pall of twilight will fall across the republic as we will no longer be able to see as clearly into the daily workings of the most powerful man in the world -- one who was elected by the people and for the people. Unfortunately, that same man -- President Donald J. Trump appears not to want to have to answer to the people."
